Top Right-hand Point Break
by Dylan, guest contributer
Our main reason for coming to La Libertad was Punta Roca, one of the world’s top right-hand point breaks. After hearing the stories and seeing broadcasts from a famous World Surf League contest, we couldn’t wait to experience it. We arrived in the afternoon, hoping to avoid the crowds. The paddle out was a challenge compared to Florida, but we quickly found ourselves in the lineup, watching set after perfect wave roll through. Kevin, a local bodyboarder, guided us around the lineup, thanks to the great folks at Club Cocal. The waves were powerful, peeling smoothly along the rocky coastline, offering fast rides that kept us on our toes. After a few hours of surfing, we were exhausted but grinning from ear to ear.
The next day, we switched it up and headed to Sunzal, a more forgiving wave just a short drive from Club Cocal. While Punta Roca was all about speed and precision, Sunzal was about pure fun. The waves were mellow, perfect for long, drawn-out carves. The mix of local surf schools and travelers created a relaxed, enjoyable vibe. After surfing, we stopped at Netos, a nearby restaurant known for its fresh seafood and ice-cold drinks. With it being so close to Club Cocal, it became our go-to spot to refuel after sessions. That’s one of the best things about Club Cocal – everything’s within reach. From world-class waves to ceviche and cold beer, it’s all right there.
One day, we drove up the coast to El Zonte, a surf town known for bitcoin, a friendly atmosphere, and yet another right-point break. Compared to Punta Roca and Sunzal, El Zonte had an even more laid-back vibe, the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time. The waves were just as good as those at the other point breaks, and the crowd was a mix of locals, travelers, and a few groms ripping it up. If you’re lucky, you might even spot Brian Perez, the Olympic surfer who helped put El Salvador on the map as a surfing destination. We spent the morning checking out local cafes and surf shops before heading back to Club Cocal.
The biggest surprise at Club Cocal was the fun waves right out back. The beach break served up playful waves, especially at the right tide. It wasn’t as perfect as Punta Roca or as cruisy as Sunzal, but it was ideal for a quick session before breakfast or at sunset. Some mornings, we’d be in the water before the sun even came up, with only the occasional local to share the waves. It felt like our own private paradise. Surfing right where we stayed made it feel like home – no rush, no crowds, just us and the waves.
After a day of surfing, returning to Club Cocal felt like a reward. Whether we were relaxing by the pool, watching the sunset on the beach, or reminiscing about the waves, it was the perfect spot to unwind. The best part was how everything was so close – no time wasted commuting. We just surfed, ate, and relaxed.
Looking back, this trip was everything we wanted from spring break – epic waves, great food, and authentic experiences you won’t find in a tourist-packed resort town. El Salvador felt real, a place where you could wake up, surf world-class waves, and end the day with a cold drink as the sun set.
Would we go back? Absolutely! If you’re a surfer looking for an unforgettable trip, Club Cocal in La Libertad should definitely be on your list.
